How to Implement Biophilic Design

What is Biophilic Design?

Biophilia translates to a love of nature. The idea that nature and the natural world can be synergistic and interweaves into human life expanded out of this concept.

Biophilic design is the implementation of Biophilia in the work or home life. Many people can do this by following the ‘outside-in’ philosophy that we previously covered. Or you can go even further by breaking the mold of what is part of the building and what is part of the earth.

For example, you can decide to litter your home with pots and plants, or you have your roof covered with sod for what are known as Green Roofing initiatives. The possibilities are only limited by your commitment to Biophilia.

The Benefits of Biophilic Design

Many people ask whether or not Biophilia is worth it because they don’t know if there are proven results for it. The truth is that Biophilic design is fantastic for your environment.

Reduces Stress –The most noticeable characteristic for some people is its ability to reduce stress. Instead of pumping air through your building, add plants and pots that generate fresh oxygen for each person in the office. Being connected to nature and seeing nature makes people relaxed.

Enhances Creativity – Countless people will attest to being inspired by nature. From the great artists of the past such as Emerson and Thoreau to the many biologists and environmentalists. It stimulates a response among everyone.

Improves Mental Well-Being – Being part of nature reduces the risk of having mental health diseases such as depression. When you incorporate it as part of your workplace, you stimulate the minds of those you work with. Read the Stanford Study here.
