Project: Philadelphia Airport Terminals

Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), the only major airport serving the nation’s 6th largest metropolitan area, is a large hub airport serving 32.24 million passengers annually.

Twenty-five airlines, including all major domestic carriers, offer nearly 500 daily departures to more than 140 destinations worldwide.

Location: 8000 Essington Ave, Philadelphia, PA 19153

The Clientโ€™s Challenge

Airport terminals can be large and overwhelming places. They are often full of people rushing to their next destination, and this can make them stressful and chaotic environments. They can also feel impersonal or sterile.

The airport wanted to add some intrigue to make the location more than just a terminal, but a destination with botanical beauty to remember.

The Jay Scotts Solution

Jay Scotts used plants and planters to make the airport terminals more inviting and beautiful. Large and small floor-standing planters were placed in strategic locations, such as by the luggage conveyors or along walkways, adding a touch of greenery and color to the terminal.

The Client’s Result

Not only did the plants improve the aesthetic of the space, but by bringing in natural elements, plants helped to create a more welcoming environment for travelers.

The result gave the airport a rich interior landscape with life sprouting from difficult-to-reach places – a task that planters perform beautifully.

A Closer Look – The Jay Scotts Difference

By adding color, texture, and life to the space, Jay Scotts softened the hard lines of the terminalโ€™s architecture and brought in natural elements with plants to help create a more welcoming environment for travelers.

As Jay Scotts offers a wide range of colors and finishes and custom colors too, the airport was able to color match their new hardscape to their existing design schemes and add even more of that iconic red to their decor.

However, with the functionality of a planter, Philadelphia Airport was able to bring life into an otherwise plain environment – something that customers consistently look for in commercial places!
